Protect your HVAC from Ants

It’s summer. It may be hot and humid outside or perhaps there are heavy rains. Both conditions aren’t ideal for ants, and in turn certainly not ideal for you. Your home is their refuge and they seldom come in small numbers. We should concern ourselves with an HVAC ant infestation, just as we concern ourselves with one in the home.

How often do ants actually cause HVAC problems?

This time of year is when ants are most active and when they end up causing problems for homeowners. Insects, primarily ants, are actually attracted to AC units. Ants are attracted to the current and electromagnetic field of the AC condenser. Ants also look to HVAC units for shelter, much like a house. They are also attracted to its dark spaces and tend to build nests there. An infestation can cause a short circuit. What can you do to prevent this from happening? Here are our tips for repelling bugs away from your AC.

  • Plant peppermint, spearmint, or rosemary nearby
  • Spray bug repellent around your AC unit
  • Put a clear chalk line around your AC unit
  • Keep surrounding areas clean and free of mulch and leaves
  • Clean the gutters
