Maybe it was the fourth set of fresh batteries in three months, or you woke up one too many times being able to see your breath. Or maybe you just want the convenience of being able to adjust the temperature of your home from your phone. Whatever the reason is, you have decided it’s time for a new smart thermostat.
If you have done your research, you have no doubt come across the term “c-wire” and realize that your options for a smart thermostat are limited based on whether you have one or not.
What is a C-Wire
A C-wire, or a common wire, carries continuous power from low-voltage heating systems (24v) to the thermostat. Most newer heating and cooling systems have C-wires, which means you can easily install a new smart thermostat. Older systems won’t have this continual power source and are battery-powered. This doesn’t mean you won’t be able to upgrade your thermostat, it just means you will need a C-wire adaptor.
C-wire adaptors are typically a small, thin box with wires that connect to your furnace or heating system that will provide a steady supply of power to your new smart thermostat.
Do I have a C-Wire?
If you want to be certain what kind of system you have and you feel confident with a screwdriver, first TURN OFF THE POWER to your HVAC system. You can then reference your owner’s manual on how to remove the thermostat faceplate and expose the wires.
Honeywell has an helpful compatibility tool that will guide you through identifying wires, options for your existing wiring, and if you will require a c-wire adaptor for other models.
