There is a lot of hype these days to have your air ducts cleaned but is it actually necessary? For answers, we went to the experts at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and here is what they had to say.
Numerous studies have been conducted on duct cleaning and air quality and they do not conclusively determine that dust levels in the home increase due to dirty ducts. They found that much of the dust that travels through your ducts actually sticks to the duct surfaces and doesn’t make its way into your home. What is more often found in your homes air are allergens from outside, particles from cooking, cleaning, or smoking.
While these particles are in your homes air along with some dust, there is no evidence that this light amount of particulates in your homes air ducts is detrimental to your health. However, the EPA does suggest a few situations where they do recommend duct cleaning.
- There is visible mold growth inside the metal siding of the ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
- If you find vermin or vermin droppings in your ducts.
- Your ducts are clogged with dust and debris that is visibly coming through your registers.
If any of the above situations occur, especially mold, it is important to work with a professional to correct the issue at its source or it will reoccur. The EPA suggests getting any suspected mold tested and have a professional inspect that parts of your HVAC system that are not visible to help track down the source any moisture.
If you still feel more comfortable getting your ducts cleaned, the EPA sees no harm in occasional cleaning. But buyer beware. Some companies may try to sell you on spraying a biocide on the inside of your ducts to kill bacteria and mold. They may even try to sell you a spray that will coat your ducts with a “sealant” that will prevent dust from sticking. While they may sound beneficial it is important to note that there are currently no chemical biocides currently registered by EPA for use in internally-insulated air duct systems.
